Relentlessly Pleasant

A Feminist Guide to Today's Workplace, the Smith College Alumnae Quarterly's feature on Producing Artistic Director Jake Lipman, looks at how Relentlessly Pleasant examines leaning in, gray areas, and #MeToo. "Though its debut run is over, Lipman wants to give small independent theater companies and college theater departments (especially at women’s colleges) the chance to perform Relentlessly Pleasant, and she is adapting it for television. She also sees the play as a teaching tool for corporate America that could be used to start conversations on workplace behavior."

Review Fix Exclusive: Inside Relentlessly Pleasant  Interview with Producing Artistic Director Jake Lipman, "I wrote RELENTLESSLY PLEASANT to explore what ambitious women, succeeding looks like — and it evolved into a workplace comedy about the many power dynamics and ways in which women have to “be” to get ahead."

Reviews

Relentlessly Pleasant

Picture
OnStage Blog (Anthony J. Piccione, NY Theatre Critic) writes, "Without a doubt, it's a compelling, well-written play. It does a very fine job of exploring issues of sexual harassment, and what it means to be a feminist in 2018, on a very human level, and does so with an excellent balance of both light humor and potent drama. ...Ms. Lipman also succeeds in selecting a cast that does a superb job at bringing this emotional play to life."

Go See a Show! Podcast interviews Producing Artistic Director Jake Lipman about creating the world premiere production of Relentlessly Pleasant, alongside dramaturg Jessica Ammirati. GSAS! correspondent Tara Gadomski says, "creating a show that goes much beyond the cliches of what we're talking about and how women are in the workplace."

The Artistic Pursuit Podcast (Caralie Chrisco and Daniel LeBlanc) interview Producing Artistic Director Jake Lipman about her acting career, producing and creating thought-provoking theater for Tongue in Cheek, and the 2018 development of a new comedic play, Relentlessly Pleasant.

Ruby - Planet Connections Theatre Fest 2018

Picture
Alexa Garcia for Drama Queens Reviews calls Susan Gross' one-woman show in the 2018 Planet Connections Theatre Fest, Ruby, "a real gem" noting "this emotion-packed tale would probably make you cry if it weren't for the clever bits of humor peppering this one-person narrative about a woman's journey post-miscarriage... a powerful night at the theater. You will laugh, you will cry, you will learn."

Mauritius

Picture
Onstage Blog hails TIC's production of Mauritius by Theresa Rebeck as "one of the more impressive productions I've seen over the course of 2017" with "performances from the five actors are the main highlight of the production, and what makes it particularly strong."
Picture
Dorian Palumbo for Drama Queens Reviews writes about TIC's production of Mauritius, "Nailing the dialogue in a Rebeck play is not by any means easy, and I'm delighted to say that the five actors in Tongue in Cheek Theater's revival all do it seamlessly and beautifully..." and "...if you're looking for theater that's funny without being frivolous, and joyous while still being thematically rich and complicated, look no further than TIC."

Plus 1 Solo Show Fest Fall 2017

Picture
Dr. Thomas Robert Stevens writes for the Applause! Applause! Rising Action Blog writes that "Susan Gross is amazing in Ruby, a solo show which explores emotional and intellectual reactions" she experiences after a profound personal loss... I was very fortunate to have seen this show."

Buffalo Heights - Planet Connections Theatre Fest 2017

Picture
Drama Queens Blog reviews TIC's revival of Buffalo Heights in the Planet Connections Theatre Fest 2017, "a comedy which careens from highbrow references to Guillaume Appollinaire all the way out to weed jokes, Trump jokes, and a talking imaginary buffalo named "Stumpy." The house was full, and the audience had a great time."

Rapture, Blister, Burn

Picture
StageBuddy.com writes, "Tongue in Cheek's revival brings an excellent perspective through its nuanced and hilarious performances. Directed by Molly Ballerstein, the cast weaves the play's humor and rich perspective on feminism and women's lives to excellent effect... creating a profound and profoundly funny must-see play."

Go See a Show Podcast talks feminism and funny females with director Molly Ballerstein, actor Brittany Anikka Liu, and Producing Artistic Director and actor Jake Lipman.

Picture
Manhattan with a Twist reviewer Nelson Diaz-Marcano writes , "Tongue in Cheek revived a show which feels both light and relevant.  It is in its lightness that they make you feel safe to listen, and then they put you right in the middle of what the main question really is. A great choice for an intimate night, and this was the right crew to put it up. What a satisfying production!"

Women Playing Hamlet

Picture
Go See a Show! Podcast correspondent Tara Gadomski calls Women Playing Hamlet  "hysterical" and "laugh out-loud funny" in her post-performance interview with Producing Artistic Director Jake Lipman, who also stars in the play, and director Molly Ballerstein.

The Inn at Lake Devine

Picture
Theatre is Easy writes about the world premiere adaptation of The Inn at Lake Devine, saying, "It’s a large cast and a uniformly strong one... Director Kimberly Faith Hickman has a steady hand... With religion always a hot button topic, it’s refreshing to see a show tackle the topic with humor and poignancy without being overly earnest."
